Abstract
Ad hoc network research has undergone remarkable changes in the past years: Coming from humble roots of researching spontaneous short-range wireless networks meshing semi-static systems, today’s ad hoc network research is targeting increasingly mobile systems, is spanning farther distances in space, in, on, and above ground and underwater, and is forming increasingly complex topologies. All this has allowed ad hoc network research to target entirely novel use cases, including nano networks, drone networks, satellite networks, participatory networks, and mobile broadband networking. This special issue reports on exactly such advances and novel applications of mobile wireless networking. We are pleased to introduce the seven papers that have been selected from this field – a field that we believe is both steeped in tradition and the source of cutting-edge research and innovation. The selection of papers explores mobility from a variety of perspectives, covering timely topics in vehicular networking, community networks, and mobile aerial networks. All these contributions highlight the pivotal relationship between wireless technology (radio as well as optical) and mobility, with the challenges and opportunities that they bring to each other.
